If you would like to travel without your suitcase, there is a small company that can move it for you.  This is Bag-A-France.  They run this service in the Loire Valley and along the Canal Des Deux Mers, which includes the Canal Du Midi.  This service is usually available from the beginning of May to the end of September.  For exact dates please consult their website.  They even can take a case of wine of your hands and bring it to your end destination somewhere along the canal.  The price per bag is about 18 euros for maximum 75 Km.
